Australia races have produced famous horses that will remain on the lips of race enthusiasts for many years to come. From pulling incredible comebacks to outstanding consistency, these horses enthralled spectators and made their jockeys wildly popular. This article explores four of the most popular horses ever to hit the race track in Australia.
The Black Caviar
This horse posted wins in all the races that she entered. Her pedigree was apparent only much later despite winning her first seven races. It was only at the Durley Classic in 2010 that she burst into the charts with a seemingly easy win beating a fabled class of proven horse to the tape.
Winx
Winx is one of the most popular horses Australia has ever produced. Posting 37 wins from the races she started, Winx officially hanged up the hooves at Randwick with a victory in the 2019 Queen Elizabeth race. A dent on Winx record career is the fact that the horse didn’t compete outside Australia. But this does not take away the remarkable achievement of this horse from the stable of Chris Waller.
Makybe Diva
Famous for making the Melbourne Cup her stomping ground, this beauty racked up three Melbourne cup wins cementing her status as a legendary horse in the modern horse racing era. Besides the treble, Makybe Diva produced once of the greatest moments in the Memsle stakes by bulleting from a losing position to beat a top drawer field. Just like Winx, Diva didnt conquer beyond Australian shores.
Phar Lap
This horse brought great smiles to Australians face ravaged by the travails of the Great Depression. Phar Lap won almost every race he entered. He dominated 3YO classics, but the Melbourne cup of 1930 was the top of the cream. Phar Lap went on to win 37 races. Sadly, he was shot but survived. He later died from the complications but not before cementing his status in the Australian horse racing scene.
